Nail Polish: Oriflame The One in Orange Burst 31455.

Oriflame usually does classic nail polish shades. Variations of beige, pink, red, purple, plum, and coffee brown are in abundance, but that’s about it. Their line VeryMe, aimed at youngsters, sometimes shows some variety. They also come out with limited edition lines, and this polish is from one of such collections.

I’m a sucker for cheap polishes. Besides, companies like Flormar have me totally spoilt in that regard – their polishes are very affordable, yet their quality is amazing. So when I saw these five shades, retailing for 59 MDL (~$4.5) each, I turned the catalogue page, thinking that I won’t be spending that much on a polish.

A few days later, though, I was picking up all five colours in the collection from my local delivery spot. You guys, the colours are just so good.

And never mind me, I’m a nail varnish maniac, I’ll buy almost anything. However, I was showing my newest purchase to an acquaintance who usually does practical gel manicures in classic hues. That didn’t stop her from purchasing all but one colours in the collection on the spot. I actually ended up repurchasing some of these shades for myself, because she just took all the bottles there and then (I haven’t had the chance to try all but the one above yet).

The quality of the polish is great, too. Above are two coats. They don’t streak, apply easily, and the brush is very convenient – a definite upgrade from the previous Oriflame Beauty nail polish brush.

However, this particular colour does the following:

Nightmare material~ That’s with a basecoat. I shudder to think what would’ve happened to my nails had I decided to skip a basecoat that day.

I painted my nails using this polish more than 10 days go, and the stain didn’t fade one bit, no matter what I do to it. Which leaves me painting my nails every day, lest the good people around me decide that I had somehow contracted hepatitis.

This detail is such a shame, because the colour is gorgeous. I’m not sure if all the polishes in the line do this, or if it’s the case with this one and the pigments in it. I’m so in love with the colour that I will continue using it, but I either need some nuke-proof basecoat, or an understanding that I would need to paint my nails every day after using this one.

Oriflame Marbleised Eyeshadow and Eyebrow Kit.

I was putting on some quick make-up several days ago, and it occurred to me that most of my selected products were by Oriflame, and being used for the first time. So I thought, hey, why not lengthen the application time by some twenty minutes by taking photos of all the products!? Sounds like good blogger fun!!

So here it is.

I have been meaning to try marbleised/ baked eye shadows for literally years. This particular Oriflame one has been on my mind for many months. Finally it appeared heavily discounted in a leaflet, and I totes decided to buy it.

I love the idea of purple eye shadows. Purple is one of my favourite colours, and I like to think that this shade flatters the colour of my eyes. However, depending on light and particular shade of purple, I usually end up looking very dead while wearing it. As you will see below.

This particular purple shadow has a lot of warmth to it, and much more red undertones than I had thought it would have whilst looking at it in the catalogue. But as you can see in the product photo above, it just photographs this way in the pot.

There’s rather a lot of glitter in this thing. I was expecting a bit of shimmer, but I was expecting a bit less.

The shadow comes with the default spongey applicator in tow. I know that as a beauty enthusiast I am supposed to scorn them, but to be honest I use them often enough to be happy about a free one.

The shadow is pigmented, goes on smoothly, and blends well. Compared to other Oriflame shadows, it’s one of the best.

Unfortunately, I can’t commend it for staying power. Five hours in, it creased a lot, and on the left eye it pretty much disappeared (apart from where it gathered in the crease).

Oriflame Beauty Eyebrow Kit

I want to write a full review of this product soon, with swatches etc., but for now let me just say: Ye dark haired folk do not be fooled by how light the darker shade is. I was like, yeeahhhh, that’s too light, lemme grab just a bit more – and bam, I had a coal-smudged brow on my face and lots of blending to do.

So far, I’m pleased. The kit comes with two small angle brushes, one with black bristles and one with white – presumably to distinguish between shade and wax one? The bristles are firm, and the tips are significantly wider than the angle brush I already have in my set. If your brows are on the thin side, you may want to use a finer tool for more precision, but I actually enjoyed using the wider one. I wish they were full size!

Nail Polish: Oriflame The One in Lilac Silk 30524.

I am happy to report that the application and the formula have seen a considerable improvement in all The One polishes I’ve tried so far. This colour and its variations (from greyish lilac, to light lilac, to intense blue purple) has become one of my obsessions over the last year. I enjoyed staring at my nails throughout the day. It’s a very gentle shade of lilac. The title of the polish couldn’t be more apt in this case. Lilac Silk suits it through and through.

Alas, it chipped quickly. It was off my nails in under 48 hours, but I still can’t quite figure out if it’s my current base that is at fault.

Pure Colour, previous main line of Oriflame polishes, has what looks like an identical shade, titled Lavender Shimmer. I can’t quite figure out whether it has shimmer in it, but judging by the title it might. The colours are very, very similar.

Oriflame Optimals Oxygen Boost Day/ Night Cream for Oily Skin

Full title: Oriflame Optimals Oxygen Boost Day/ Night Cream for Oily Skin

Brand: Oriflame

Claim to fame: Deep hydration and rejuvenation with a mattifying effect.

Cruelty-free? Used to be, but lately the cruelty-free claim seems to be absent from the back of local catalogues. Sadface.

Select Ingredients: Lingonberry, the Swedish super-antioxidant fruit. (Well, berry.) Specially formulated in this case, with 50% berry extract and 50% leaf extract, which is said to give triple the antioxidant effect.

Scent:

The scent of this is pleasant. At first I thought it a bit harsh, but it grew on me. To my nose there’s a slight difference between day and night scents. I feel like it has a citrusy undertone, but one thing I’ll never be is a sommelier and a perfumer – my nose is shit at discerning anything that’s not gasoline, propane, or cat piss.

Packaging:

The entire Oriflame Optimals facial creams series comes in glass jars. They’re sturdy, with a wider bottom, and plastic caps. The glass feels almost luxurious in your hands, and at first I really liked them. But then the combination of their heaviness, the cream-covered hands, and my glass bathroom shelf started to worry me. Seriously, this thing feels heavy. I think if I dropped it, it’d leave a crack in the sink.

But either way, I shall remain the proponent of this packaging, because glass doesn’t come into a reaction with the jar’s contents — something I’m never too sure about when it comes to plastic packaging.

Another thing about the way these creams are packaged: I loved the leaf design on the boxes. I even saved it for photographs, as you can see below, and considered just keeping them as part of my general pile of paper ephemera. I dunno man, it just speaks to me.

Also, the writing comes on stickers, but they are thin and surprisingly good quality. Usually I rip the stickers off because I get this tic where I absolutely have to pick at it. These were so even, though, they remained untouched.

Action:

So far I’ve used up two jars of day cream (light green) and one jar of night cream (darker green). It’s odd, because night cream was more to my liking. Day cream claims to be mattifying (haven’t noticed), and as a result of that it has just the slightest amount of residue that you can feel on your skin quite a while after the application. The night cream is also more hydrating (d’oh) and left my skin feeling more even.

Aside from a little bit of residue that I felt after applying day cream, these two absorb quickly, and leave the skin smooth and plump. When I worked from home, day cream provided enough hydration. However, when I started working in the office, it proved to be less effective in battling the effects of air conditioners and electrified dust.

Both creams leave skin a bit tingly after application, especially if you use a harsher toner, but I actually kinda came to like the tingles. No rash, redness, or any adverse reaction – just a slight tingly feeling, that made me go a bit like, yeah the thing’s working.

These particular two creams are formulated for oily skin of all ages. As far as moisturisers go, this one is okay. Expect no magic from it, though it’s better than many others in its price range.

tl;dr/ Would I repurchase? On the fence. Currently trying other options, but I might go back to it, because I know that it will not fail me for basic daily use. No breakouts, no reactions, happy with its scent, nicely packaged, overall satisfactory.

Oriflame HairX Volume Boost Series.

The thing with volumising shampoos — all of them, not just this particular one — is they’re basically a detergent. They are designed to strip away as much oil as possible so that the hairs will feel lighter, ergo appear more voluminous.

The obvious downside to that is it will more than likely mess with your scalp’s natural oil balance. And it is never a good thing.

Did I get the promised voluminous result? Totally. And it would hold beyond first day.

But I also got mild irritation, more skin flaking than strictly necessary (not quite dandruff, but gettin’ there), and an occasional frizz. Which is a total novelty for me. I rarely even get basic static in my hair. With this shampoo, I could probably generate enough voltage to kill a mouse or something. Especially odd since one of the descriptions of this shampoo I saw online says that it helps prevent static.

Nope.

With all that said, I didn’t find the shampoo especially drying to the hair shaft. It didn’t feel any more damaged or brittle after I started using this product. It’s the scalp that suffered.

I tried using the conditioner in various ways — in combination with masks and/ or simple conditioners or on its own. It works either way. After generous spritz and some blow drying with my head down, I end up with voluminous shiny hair. I worried a bit about using it on its own, as my hair is pretty damaged from my previous experiments with it. But it held well. No tangling, brushed easily. However, I still recommend that you use your actual conditioner at least once a week and also apply deeper treatments as necessary.

The conditioner also worked when combined with other shampoos.

The only complain I have about the leave-in conditioner is its scent. It’s an okay scent overall, but there’s an undercurrent of something sweet that deeply annoys me. And since it’s a leave-in conditioner, it follows you.

Amusing fact: My brother and father both used this shampoo whilst visiting me. One ended up looking like a really spiky match, the other one like a dandelion. They didn’t know what hit them. I kept mum of course. It was funny. And yet more proof that it does indeed work.
